- Siemens Healthineers' "The Box" revolutionizes night shifts

Together with the United Robotics Group, Siemens Healthineers has developed a pioneering solution to overcome challenges such as the shortage of specialist staff in small and medium-sized hospital laboratories: “The Box”. This innovative automation solution uses robotics to enable efficient and reliable emergency diagnostics around the clock without the need for permanent staff on site.

The Box consists of a sample input module, three analyzers for clinical chemistry/immunology, haematology and coagulation, two robotic arms and a Hettich robotic centrifuge. By delegating repetitive but essential processes to the robotic arms, up to 95% of emergency diagnostics can be carried out autonomously for up to 16 hours without on-site supervision. The results are validated remotely via a connected 24/7 central laboratory.

The clear advantages of “The Box”
It offers a compact small automation solution with a minimal footprint of just 17 m², enables a high throughput using the two robot arms and offers a high level of reliability thanks to intelligent communication using its own middleware. In addition, it is possible to switch between automatic and manual operation in just 5 minutes without the need for calibration.
